Body Mass Index (BMI) Reporting

Exclusion from BMI Reporting

Recent changes to the New York State Education Law regarding school health examinations require that a student's weight, and height are measured to determine the student's body mass index (BMI). This statistic helps Health Care Providers to determine if a student's weight is in a healthy range or is too high or low.  A sample of school districts around the state are selected randomly each year to participate in a BMI survey with the results sent to the New York State Department of Health.  If our school district is selected to be included in the survey, all district BMI student weight group status will be reported. Only summary information is provided to NYSED and no names of personally identifying information is sent as part of the survey.

If you do not wish to have your child's weight status group information included in the survey, please contact your child's Health Office by January of the current school year.
